MARKET INTELLIGENCE · SEPTEMBER 2026
An executive view of Australia's travel and hotel market, combining demand, source markets, hotel performance and traveller behaviour to identify the commercial signals that matter.
This is not a tourism statistics report.
It is a commercial intelligence brief for hotel owners, asset managers, revenue leaders and marketing teams deciding where to allocate capital, protect rate, stimulate demand and capture the next source of growth.
The executive question
Australia's headline travel numbers tell only part of the story.
Inbound demand is moving at different speeds across markets. Hotel performance is diverging by destination.
Traveller behaviour is changing. And pricing power increasingly depends on when and where demand appears, not simply how much demand exists.
The commercial advantage comes from identifying these shifts early and acting before they become visible in headline performance.

01 · MARKET OVERVIEW
EXECUTIVE INTERPRETATION
Australia’s headline demand is no longer a simple recovery story. The market is now entering a more selective phase where volume, traveller mix, state-level performance and event compression are moving at different speeds. For a leadership team, the opportunity is to stop treating demand as a single national number and start using it as an operating signal: where to push rate, where to protect base occupancy, and where to invest in higher-intent channels.
Australia’s travel demand is steady but uneven: inbound volumes have recovered, outbound travel remains strong, and hotel operators are watching state-by-state demand shifts.
02 · INBOUND VOLUME
WHAT THIS MEANS
The arrival curve shows why timing matters more than averages. Demand peaks are concentrated around the Australian summer window, but the commercial risk sits in the shoulder months: properties that wait for occupancy to appear will price late, while operators with forward-looking intelligence can lift rates earlier, package around events, and protect margin before compression becomes visible in public data.
Short-term visitor arrivals are close to flat year on year, with seasonal peaks still concentrated around December and January.
Australia: Short-term visitor arrivals — monthly trend (Jul 2025–Jul 2026)
Visitor arrivals remain seasonal, with the strongest uplift through the December/January summer travel window.

03 · HOTEL PERFORMANCE
C-SUITE READ
The state split exposes a leadership problem: national demand can look stable while local revenue opportunities diverge sharply. Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland should not be managed with the same commercial playbook. The value of a live intelligence layer is that it turns market movement into operating choices — where to hold rate, where to chase volume, and where to use events or source-market shifts to justify premium positioning.
Sydney and Melbourne set the ADR benchmark, while leisure-heavy markets continue to benefit from domestic and international holiday demand.
Australia: state or territory of stay — Jun 2025 vs Jun 2026
NSW, Victoria and Queensland account for the majority of short-term visitor stays, with every major mainland state down year on year in June.
Jun 2025
Jun 2026
NSW recorded 200,580 visitor stays in Jun 2026 (-7.8% YoY), followed by Victoria at 141,070 (-7.6%) and Queensland at 133,290 (-10.4%).

04 · AUDIENCE & SEGMENTS
SEGMENT IMPLICATION
Travel categories reveal the customer mix behind the revenue line. Outbound resident travel remains strong, while inbound visitor arrivals are softer year on year — a reminder that Australian operators cannot rely on passive international recovery alone. The winning strategy is sharper segmentation: identify which guests are returning, which are absent, and which offers, channels and stay patterns will convert them profitably.
Visitor behaviour is split between family-led holiday travel, education-linked stays, events, and long-haul return trips.
Australia: arrivals and departures by category — Jun 2026
Resident short-term travel dominates outbound volume, while short-term visitor arrivals show the clearest inbound-tourism signal.
Short-term resident departures reached 1.15M in Jun 2026 (+4.6% YoY), while short-term visitor arrivals were 566,910 (-9.2% YoY).
05 · SOURCE MARKETS
GO-TO-MARKET SIGNAL
Source-market movement is where strategy becomes practical. A softening top market changes campaign priority; a recovering market changes language, timing and channel mix; a resilient niche market can become the highest-margin acquisition opportunity. This is the type of signal C-suite teams need before budget is committed — not after quarterly performance has already landed.

Jun 2025
Jun 2026
New Zealand led at 98,960 visitors in Jun 2026, followed by China at 58,970 and Singapore at 54,260. Japan rose to 22,730 while most large source markets softened year on year.
06 · MARKET COMPARISON
WHY BENCHMARKING MATTERS
Arrivals and departures show the broader travel balance sheet. When outbound appetite stays strong while inbound demand is uneven, operators need a benchmarked view of where Australia sits against comparable destinations. That context helps executives separate structural opportunity from temporary noise — and decide whether the next move is pricing, distribution, marketing, or product packaging.
Australia sits between long-haul mature markets and faster-rebounding Asian destinations, making source-market mix more important than simple volume.
Australia: total overseas arrivals and departures — monthly trend
Australia continues to show large two-way travel flows, with outbound departures frequently exceeding inbound arrivals.
